Striving for success

Life doesn’t need to be about the outward appearance of success; big houses, cars and salaries etc.

If you compare yourself with others; there will always be someone who has more, or it might seems that way.

You’ll never be satisfied with where you are or what you have if you look to others or social media for validation.

So how do I measure my success?

Am I happy, or at least content?

Do I have a roof over my head?

Do I have food?

Are my family and friends okay?

I know this sounds cliched, but it’s easy to forget.

Other metrics could be:

Have I checked in with those around me?

If I’ve promised to help someone; did I?

If I’ve set a task for myself; is it progressing or complete? They don’t have to be big events. My daily ones are mostly about exercise. I run before work, so completing a session is a good feeling. It’s a success early in the day. The weather at the moment doesn’t make going outside very inviting. The storm last weekend was a deterrent. But I went out anyway. It wasn’t as bad as it sounded from inside the house. Another tick in the box for the day.

It all adds up to provide a daily feeling of satisfaction.

Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t tick all of the boxes though. There will be times when it’s not going to be possible, but that’s okay. I put a plan together and return to it later.

Lastly; do I really need to compare myself to others? Let them live their way, and I’ll do the same.
