So macho

I don’t think Sinitta had the same thoughts for the song as I did whilst writing this post. She wanted to meet a certain type of man. I lament my hobby of cycling as having too much machismo at times.

It’s likely other activities are similar, being dominated by men. They are setup, and configured for men who form the majority of the participants.

Women can be as assertive and dominating, but most often they choose not to be or to not take part.

So what are the consequences?

Activity can quickly become competitive. Races to the top of the hill or sign post happen more often even on social rides.

Steadily increasing the pace without regard for everyone involved.

Conversations often revolve around achievements and stats.

Comparisons are made about equipment. More techy talk.

None of the above is male only; women can have the same drivers, and interests.

I’m not imune, but it interests me less and less. I’m more often in the mood these days for steady rides with the occasional hard effort up a hill. But not every hill.

I rarely talk about how far or fast I ride. I used to push to ride further and more quickly, but it doesn’t bother me so much now. I want people to enjoy exercise. Having them think they need to emulate me may put them off. There are some that can’t ride as I do, and many that can exceed my limits.

I don’t want to be the reason anyone gives up. Follow my desire for better mental and physical health; how you do it needs to be your way.

My club has a good number of both genders. But it is nearly all male for the longer faster riding groups. There needs to more encouragement of a wider spread; if people want that.

When I’m riding I see mostly men; sportives and other organised events are the same.

There are some women only clubs, and I understand why they are needed. But it would be great if cycling in general was universally inviting to all.
