Greenwich walkabout on film

Primarily a chance to catch up with my sister I took my film camera along. I think I was in my teens the last time I visited the Cutty Sark. Back then it was a much lower tech environment. This was way before the glass structure that now surrounds the hull.

I think the structure gives the impression of water surrounding the ship.

From the deck there is quite a contrast with the age of the ship and the very modern cityscape across the river.

My sister pointed out the figure in the rigging. We both agreed we wouldn’t climb so high when the Cutty Sark was stable as it is now, and certainly not while it was rolling and pitching at sea.

The figurehead was difficult to get a good angle to photograph, but other examples were much easier.

Another marvel is the foot tunnel under the Thames. A long spiral staircase or a lift goes down 50 feet to pass under the river.

As we strolled through the park after having lunch purchased from an Ethiopian food stall in the covered market I saw another strong view of the big changes London has seen.

This time the Maritime Museum.

Then finally past the museum again with the observatory on the hill behind. I’m a little ashamed to admit I’ve never been inside the building that is the home of Greenwich mean time.
