Doing it for cash

Obviously I’m talking about creating social media content.

It’s a topic Matt and I have frequently discussed over a hot beverage at Sheree’s or where ever we met before it became the default place on a Sunday.

It was always very tongue in check, we knew no-one was going to pay or sponsor us. The number of readers wasn’t going to make monetising it worthwhile. Although Matt was once sent a suit bag to review; his blog is about travel, as well as the cycling, with the occasional cafe visit.

Often are the times, mostly as a ride my bike, I’ll day dream about being paid to do this. I’d write about why I do it and what benefits it brings to me and the wider world. It does include reviews on purchases, I’ve never been given anything.

Of course the modern blogger produces video, that’s not for me. I don’t like being in front of the camera. I’m not sure written blogs are successful enough unless you already have a big following through other social media platforms. I do have over 600 followers on instrgram, a similar number on X and 356 on threads. Surely that must be enough to be an “influencer”. Do I need tik-ok? I hope not because I can’t dance.

How do youtubers make a living? I read that each view doesn’t pay much. They appear to do well, with sometimes only a few sponsors to add to their income.

I know it’s just a pipe dream. And that I’d likely need to specialise rather than write about a fairly wide range of subjects. I like what I do and it helps me, maybe others too. So I guess I’ll keep on creating posts as I have always done.
